What will the tryouts be like?

The tryouts will be very similar in format to what you would encounter at an ICPC regional or at the ICPC World Finals. You will have five hours to solve 8-11 programming problems in teams of three, with each team having access to just one computer. Your solution must be written in C, C++, or Java, and will be evaluated using a series of automated judging tools (which means you will find out if your solution is correct within a few minutes of submitting it to the judges). You are scored both on the number of problems solved and the speed at which you solve them.

The difficulty of the problems we will use at the tryouts will be comparable to that of an ICPC regional. To get a better sense for the type of problems you can expect at the tryouts, check out our Problems page or the archive of past problems from our region (Mid-Central USA).

Rules

We will follow the same rules as an ICPC Regional contest, with some wiggle room, given that this is not an official ICPC contest.

One main difference is that we will allow registration from eligible teams and ineligible teams:

  • An eligible team is one where all three contestants are eligible to participate in ICPC and are willing and able to participate in the ICPC Regionals and in the ICPC World Finals. If you are a UChicago undergraduate, you meet the ICPC eligibility criteria (when in doubt, see the official eligibility criteria).
  • An ineligible team is one where at least one of the three contestants is ineligible to participate in ICPC or is unwilling or unable to participate in the ICPC regionals and in the ICPC World Finals.

All teams can win Google swag at the tryouts. Only the top eligible team can win the Amazon gift certificates.

Schedule

The tryouts will take place in the Maclab on May 22, 2010, starting at 10:30am.

  • 10:30am - 11:00am: Welcome. We will review the rules and policies for the contest.
  • 11:00am - 12:15pm: Practice contest and lunch. We will hold a practice contest using trivial problems so contestants can familiarize themselves with the contest environment, the judging tools, etc. Lunch will be served starting at 11:30am.
  • 12:15pm - 12:30pm: To Your Stations. Teams report to their workstations and coaches report to the judging area. Sealed contest questions and necessary contest materials are distributed to the teams at 12:29pm.
  • 12:30pm: Contest Begins.
  • 5:00pm: Scoreboard is frozen. Contestants will not be able to see the progress of other teams in the last 30 minutes of the contest.
  • 5:30pm: Contest Ends. No further submissions or dialogue requests are accepted.
  • 5:30pm - 6:00pm: Final judgement. The site judges finish all last-minute entries, double-check and finalize the scores.
  • 6:00pm - 7:00pm: Awards and dinner. The final ranking is revealed, and prizes are handed out. Dinner will be provided.
